Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux is a condition in which acidic contents from the stomach reflux up into the esophagus. This can be caused by physiologic changes such as transient relaxations of the lower esophageal sphinter relaxations or mechanical problems such as hiatal hernia. Proton pump inhibitors can provide effective relief though controversy exists over long term side effects. Examples include nexium, prilosec, protonix, aciphex, dexilant, lansoprazole etc.
